Abstract

Fair was brought in China in modern times, and continued to nurture and develop. Until 1929, the West Lake Expo sponsored by Zhejiang Province promoted China Expo to peak. The Expo was sponsored by local governments ,which was a nationwide Expo. I try to dig out the political context of this economic activity , clarify the position and the effect played by Zhang Jingjiang and analyse the role acted by the central and local governments, businessmen at the fair, as well as the effect on national and Zhejiang’s economy.This article is divided into four parts. The first part outlines the background of the West Lake Expo——the social context, institutional background and exactly economic conditions of Zhejiang Province, and the personal promotion by Zhang Jingjiang. Among the four backgrounds, the first three are objective, the fourth is subjective. The three objective backgrounds promoted the emergence of a vast Expo respectively from different points of view, and the subjective background did what little one could to help the Expo. Finally, the West Lake Expo came into being. After discussing the three objective backgrounds, a decision is made that the emergence of the West Lake Expo was inexorable, but accidental according to the subjective. In addition, I further clarify Zhang Jingjiang personal achievements.The second part discusses the work of the Preparatory Committee. The success of a large exhibition depends on perfect preparatory work. The Preparatory Committee carried out an orderly manner. Such as site- selection, fund-raising, exhibits-collecting, publicity and striving for supports from various aspects.The third part focuses on the opening of the West Lake Expo. After the intense preparatory work of the Preparatory Committee, the West Lake Expo finally opened on June 6. In addition to introducing the spectacular opening ceremony, I count up the number of the staff participating and the visitors, analyse the persons, I sum up the characteristics of the West Lake Expo and I make a comparision with the Wuhan China-made goods Expo and analyse the relationship between the central government, local governments and merchants. By analysing the persons who participated the the opening ceremony and thevisitors, I make a conclusion that the Nanjing Government and the other local governments attached great importance to the West Lake Expo, then I get the indirect importance to Zhejiang Province. The West Lake Expo was a Party’s fair according to the conclusion to the characteristics of the Expo. By comparing with the Wuhan China-made goods Expo, two conclusions are made, one is the central government attaches great importance to the Expo, the other is the West Lake Expo was a nationwide grand meeting. Rationalize the relationship between the central and local governments and the businessmen and clear their respective roles in the event.Part IV outlines the impact of the West Lake Expo. Such a grand meeting had an effect on Zhejiang Province as well as all aspects of the whole country. This part focuses on the promotion of the Expo on economy, sanitation, education and so on. Through the data, we can see the Expo enhanced China’s economy, while the effect on hygienic constrction, education construction were unseen, however, the West Lake Expo contributed too much to the two aspects.Political forces ultimately drived the success of the Expo, which was obvious, and Zhang Jingjiang played a core role in various political forces, Zhejiang province sponsored the Expo, the central government and the merchants cooperated. The Expo drived the national economic growth, especially leapt the economy of the Zhejiang province.
