Abstract

Aiming at improving the target performance level of structures, the performance based seismic design theory (PBSD) requires that the performance of structures designed using it should be predictable. Compare to traditional seismic design theory, it has many characteristics, such as flexibility, suitability and pertinence. Nowadays, PBSD is recognized by more and more building owners and structures designers. Direct displacement-based seismic design is one of the performance-based seismic designs. Because displacement can reflect the performance of the structure better than that of strength, it has such advantages that the method is more straightforward and it is easy to use.According to structural seismic design by damage-reduction, in this paper, a ten floor double-frame model with energy consumption related beam has been established. By using of the direct displacement-based design method, this structure is designed according with different performance levels under different earthquake levels. And the results calculated are verified by non-linear static push-over analysis method, the structural performance is checked through the lateral carrying capability, ductility and the order of plastic hinge. From the design example we can found:1) The indexes of the different performance levels expressed by the inter-story drift ratio can availably control the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete frame structure under different earthquake levels.2) The select of displacement model directly influenced the outcome of calculated results based on direct displacement-based seismic design. This paper presents an improved SRSS displacement mode, it can consider the combination of different modes of vibration that contribute to the lateral deformation, which is more in line with the actual displacement curve.3) The energy consumption related beam yielded at first and plastic hinge formed in the process of structure thrusting, it played a better energy dissipation effect, the whole structure has good ductility.4) When the earthquake magnitude increased, in order to meet the demand of deformation and strength for the improving structure performance level, the sections of beam and column should be increased.
