Abstract


Recently, in some media, movies and literature works of modern China, we can frequently find such sentence pattern as”You VP”, which does not exist in the traditional Chinese grammar. This essay discusses the diachronic changing process, the possible reason of the appearance in Mandarin Chinese, and the developing tendency of the pattern. Besides this essay studies the construction of this sentence pattern, which includes the part of speech of“You”, its semantic and pragmatic meaning, the characteristic and type of VP. It’s pointed out that this sentence pattern attributes its appearance to mutual influence of the inner and outer elements. Meanwhile, the southern dialect and the English word“have”have a great influence on this language phenomenon. We can predict that the special usage of“You”word sentence has already been in Mandarin Chinese and will be accepted .Five parts can be divided in this essay.Part one The introduction: This part mainly introduces the reason for this topic, the existing researching achievement, the difference and blemish among the researching area, the innovation of this essay, the theory and method in this essay .Part two The diachronic change of“You VP”: This part studies the diachronic changing process, the change from ancient times to modern times. Actually the sentence pattern has been existed in ancient times with high frequency of utilization, plentiful meaning and complex type of VP. But it experienced a shrinking process in modern times. The perfective and emphasis usage has already disappeared.Part three The change of“You VP”in modern times: At first this sentence pattern is limited in Mandarin Chinese. As the development of language, it’s been used with wide range. It attributes its appearance to the influence of other language elements, especially the southern dialect and the English auxiliary”have”.Part four The construction of“You VP”: In this sentence pattern, the part of speech of“You”is an adverb. VP is the verbal phrase with various types, at least twelve types. The word“You”has semantic meaning of perfective tense. Besides it has pragmatic meaning of emphasis function and strong emotional coloring.Part five The reason for the appearance of“You VP”in Mandarin Chinese: This sentence pattern attributes its appearance to mutual influence of the inner and outer elements: the adjustment of Chinese grammar system, the spread of the media and the language economical principle. We’re confident that the special usage of“You”word sentence will be accepted and developed in Mandarin Chinese.
