Abstract


This paper explores the computerization of functional grammar and gives insight into the computerization or the automated processing of systemic functional grammar.It was considered an impossible mission for a meaning-based grammar related much to semantics and systemic network to get off the ground in a computable form. This study should be regarded as one at the pilot stage aroused by an enduring interest in natural language processing and computerization of Halliday’s descriptive grammar designed for natural language such as English, an international working language.This thesis gives possible ways of implementing a computable form of functional grammar including the key notions such as theme and rheme, mood and residue, process, participant and circumstance and grammatical metaphor, etc. using illustrative models and diagrams. Some relevant computational features are listed and outlined for further discussion.
