Abstract


This paper takes plays of Yuan Dynasty as the research subject and attempts to raise a discussion on the relationship between the play and poetry based on a study of the plays where poems are accepted and used.Great progresses have been achieved in the study of plays of Yuan Dynasty, among which studies on independent plays such as the collecting, compiling or annotation of certain plays have been exceedingly rich than the diachronic studies focusing on the development history of the plays or on the different genres of the plays. For example, although there are many results concerning the use of poems in plays as well as the relationship between poetry and plays, there is still space for further study. Therefore, the author tends to carry out a close examination on the details of the use of poems in plays of Yuan Dynasty and go further into the relationship between the poetry and plays.The difficulty of this study lies in the influence of the plays of Yuan Dynasty on poetry, which almost has not been related before. In addition, this paper owns more comprehensive understanding on the influence of poetry on plays either generally or specifically. This is no denying that poetry imposes a great affect on the creation of plays. For instance, the writing of poems doubles the play authors’identity; poems provide rich story materials for the plays; the non-dramatic lyrics have been used in plays and the poetic language influences the language of the plays etc. On the contrary, the effect of the plays on poems can not be neglected either. For example, the development of plays gives birth to the dramatic poetry; the flourish of the plays is one of the critical factors that lead to the wane of the lyrics of the Yuan Dynasties; and plays enrich the materials for poem writing. In a word, in the development course of both of the poetry and plays, their influence on each other inseparably existed.In this research the author works out the models and patterns by which literary works of different genres (plays or poetry) penetrate into, affect, transfer from or make use of each other. In general, poetry influences the creation and development of plays, and specifically, the influence can be traced through the borrowing and transferring from poetry in plays. Moreover, the enrichment of poetry texts and theories and the spreading of poems are credited to the development of plays of Yuan Dynasty.
