Abstract

Where there are one thousand readers, there are one thousand Hamlets. For The Color Purple by Alice Walker, people have many different points to study it, just like Womanism, homoerotism, religion, narratability etc. From the point of bildungsroman this paper has studied the process of the Black people’s ideas and mentality in The Color Purple, which grow from infantility to mature. I mean that Warlker’s initiation theme is for opening out the possibility of the Black people’s initiation, and point out the way to liberation. So, we can deeply apprehend the connotation and significance of The Color Purple.This paper has seven portions in all. In the introduction, I have pointed out that, as a style, the bildungsroman itself has the ample esthetics significances and science value, and the study of them will help us to know the foreign literature comprehensively and deeply. Whereas the lack of enough recognition inboard, and there is no systems analysis about this novel as a initiation story. So I take this new point to study The Color Purple, and I hope to take a new sample in the study of bildungsroman. In the second portion, I have carded the process of genesis and growing about the western initiation stories, to lay out the creation tradition of the western initiation stories. To get a foundation for the study of The Color Purple, I have named what the initiation story is. In the third portion, I have studied the whole process of Celie, from puerility to bewilderment, and then from disillusion to mature, it shows that The Color Purple has kept to the fixed pattern of bildungsroman. This novel accords with the definition of bildungsroman, so it is a typical bildungsroman. In the forth portion, I have studied Celie’s process, at the points of the faith, the emotion, and the femininity, I want to show that with the help of the sisters, the anneal of the life, and the efforts of themselves, all the Black women can carry out their own growing, to perfect themselves, and to gain new lives. In the fifth portion, I have introduced the Black men’s growing processes, and I point that the dormant root of the Black women’s misery life is the violence of the Black men’s. The modify of the Black women’s condition depends not only on the efforts of themselves, but also the growing of the Black men. The author’s referrer to the initiation theme of the Black men is important, it is the complementarity and the profoundness to the novel’s initiation theme. In the sixth portion, I have explained the creation reasons of this novel, I have found that the initiation theme of The Color Purple comes from the author’s growing process and the real-life of the society. The seventh portion is a conclusion, the author has portrayed the growing process of the Black women as Celie, it is a breakthrough to the confiding- remonstrating-only theme in feminist literature, this makes the innovation of the creation come true inwardly. Further more, from the conflict to the interlocution, Alice Walker has kept discussing the Black men’s initiation and the modify possibility of the gender relation, and it yet boosts up the massiness of the novel. Be growing, be exuviating. In this process, the individual would be experience the pain, but this is the very turning point to perfect themselves. In The Color Purple, there is a kind of belief shown on the Black people, Alice Walker always believes that a person can be changed, and the transformation of the society ties to the individual’s changing, that is the reason why the author brings forth the theme of individual’s initiation.
