Abstract


The present author tries to probe into the postmodernist indeterminacy displayed in the postmodernist novel The Crying of Lot 49, by one of the most important postmodernist writers Thomas Pynchon.The crying of lot 49 is often classified as a notable example of postmodernist fiction, which has attracted a lot of critical attention and praise. Critics probed into the novel from different aspects such as postmodernism, existentialism, and feminism etc. There is no doubt that these explorations have enlightened our studies of the novel. After reading the novel and various critical reviews, it is easy for us to see that most critics have neglected one important feature of Pynchon’s novels—the indeterminacy, which is also one of the major aesthetic characteristics of postmodern fiction. In this thesis, the present author intends to use postmodernist indeterminacy to analyze this novel.Apart from introduction and conclusion, this thesis includes five chapters. Introduction part presents a brief biographical sketch of Thomas Pynchon, his literary achievements, The Crying of Lot 49 and its critical response. In addition, critical theory applied is also attempted. Chapter one concentrates on the definition of indeterminacy, background of indeterminacy, and ways of showing indeterminacy as an attempt to the exposition of the critical theory applied. Chapter two analyzes the indeterminacy in the language from several aspects. Chapter three focus on the indeterminacy in characters. Chapter four and Chapter five deal with the indeterminacy in the plot and indeterminacy in the theme respectively. Finally, the present author draws the conclusion that The Crying of Lot 49 is a typical postmodernist novel which is full of indeterminacy.
