Abstract

Wireless communication technology is one of the fastest developing and most attracting fields. More and more techniques and methods turn up in this field, and one of them is Ultra-Wide Band (UWB). UWB is a new wireless communication technology with huge development potential, which grows up after the period of 1990s’. At present, people from academe and industry are paying more and more attention to the UWB, for its high data speed and low power consumption. UWB will definitely widely applicated in the future. So,to research and improve the performance of UWB communication circuit is of great importance to the wirelss communication development. The paper briefly introduces the research status and significance of UWB Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) and Mixer. Then the basic theory of receiver, LNA and Mixer are summarized systematically. Finally,a current-mode method that was supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China(No.60776021) is adopted, a current-mode merged LNA and Mixer is presented. The main works of this paper consist of following aspects:(1) By analyzing the characteristic of UWB signal, a better structure of RF receiver is chosen, and the DC offset and 1/f noise problems of the Direct conversion receiver are solved.(2) A new lower complexity ultra-wide-band 1-10-GHz low-noise amplifier is presented in this paper. This LNA only consists of two simple amplifiers with an inter-stage inductor connected. The first stage is a common-gate amplifier that is used to attain the wideband input matching and low noise. A common- source amplifier with shunt-peaked load as the second stage achieves high gain and wideband output matching simul- taneously that does not need the source follower. Designed in the TSMC 0.18μm RFCMOS technology, this proposed UWB LNA achieves the maximum power gain (S21) of 12.1 dB with the 3-dB band from 1 to 10 GHz and input/output reflection coefficient (S11, S22) of less than–10 dB from 1 to 10 GHz.The minimum noise figure is 3.8dB.An IIP3 is -4.1dBm at 5 GHz.The power dissipation is 12.6mW from a 1.5-V supply voltage.(3) A merged LNA and Mixer covering the frequency range from 3.1-10.6 GHz that able to meet the UWB communication technology. By employing the cross-coupling technique at the input of LNA and output of mixer, the gain is enhanced and the NF is reduced. The output current of LNA flows into a current-mode Mixer directly, resulting in significant linearity improvements and power saves. Designed in the Chartered 0.18-μm RFCMOS technology, this proposed block achieves the maximum power conversion gain of 21 dB and input reflection coefficient (S11) of less than–10 dB from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. The minimum single side band noise figure is 8.5dB.An IIP3 is -4 dBm at 5 GHz. The power dissipation is 13.6mW from a 1.5-V supply voltage. The proposed circuits are first simulated by ADS2006,and the layouts and post-layout simulations are accomplished by Candence spectre and virtuso. The pre-layout simulation and post-layout simulation results show that it is more excellent than recently published CMOS designs.
