Abstract

The hybrid finite element method/boundary integral method (FE-BI) takes advantages of both the finite element method (FEM) in solving the electromagnetic problems of the structures consisting of an inhomogeneous dielectric body of arbitrary shape and the method of moment (MoM) in solving the open domain electromagnetic problems. Therefore, it plays an important role in analyzing the characteristic of electromagnetic scattering from complex targets. In recent years, many researchers have been interested in the characteristic of the electromagnetic scattering from arbitrary shaped 3-D dielectric/ metallic composed with dielectric targets. This dissertation investigates the electromagnetic scattering using FE-BI combined with higher order vector basis functions. The following contributions have been made:Firstly, this dissertation introduces the theory of FE-BI, gives the detail formulation of FEM and MoM and the definition of the linear equation of FE-BI. There are three current schemes to solve these linear equations. The dissertation also discusses the relationship between "Whitney" vector basis function and "RWG" basis function.Secondly, combined with higher order vector basis functions, higher-order and mixed-order vector FE-BI are developed. The numerical results are in good agreement with the published data. Then, the two methods are applied to calculate electromagnetic scattering from some classic complex targets.Lastly, based on the theory of FE-BI for 3-D cavity, the definition of finite-element’s functional is given and the electromagnetic scattering from 3-D cavity is analyzed by FE-BI code.
