In this paper, the state of the art of differential settlement of soft soil foundationis studied, and the critical engineering of differential settlement of soft soil foundationin Guangxi is modeled by test in situ and finite element software ABAQUS.Differential settlement of soft clay foundation and its computational method issummarized. In the 3D numerical simulation of soft soil, its settlement could besimulated well by using the constitutive model Mohr-Coulomb, while in the 2Dnumerical simulation of soft soil, the Drucker-Prager shows better.Parameters gotten from the model test like Young’s Modulus E , Poisson’s ratio? ,Cohesion c and friction angle ? etc. are very important for the choice ofconstitutive model in the following numerical simulation. By contrastive analysis ofthe p ? s curve (Load-Settlement curve made by load test) from the model test andengineering example, it is found that the finite element simulation is feasible to guidegeotechnical engineering practice by controlling the soil parameter in the model test.In the model’s load test, as the pipe gaps diameter’augment, the P-S curve getssteep from gently, which shows that the settlement in the same pressure will get largeras the pipe gaps gets biggerThe stratum difference, pile number and diameter’s effect on the differentialsettlement of soft soil foundation in the engineering example are studied by numericalsimulation. It shows that the differential settlement gets larger and then tends gentlyas the stratum’s height difference increase. When the pile number increases, thedifferential settlement gets larger, and the efficiency of pile groups shows clearly.When the pile diameter gets bigger, the differential settlement will decrease and thetrend get gently until the pile’s semidiameter reach 300mm.The analytic result of differential settlement shows that determining of soil parameters is a key step in design. It is of far reaching importance for guidingengineering practice to study the differential settlement of soft clay foundation bymaking model test and using the finite element.
