Abstract


With the reform and development of higher education, especially along with the expansion of enrollment, more poverty-stricken students gain accesses to higher learning. However, the rising of fees for college students deteriorates the financial condition for them and scales up the poor students proportion in colleges. Thus ever-present poor students problem in colleges has become a striking hot issue in higher learning development.The status quo of ideological education for poverty-stricken students in Sichuan Normal University (SNU) is typical in that of higher learning institutes in Southwest China. According to the statistics from two relevant questionnaires survey in SNU, one of which was carried out in early 2007 for 6211 college students and the other one in the September of 2008 for poor students, current ideological education is typically narrowly targeted one with singleness in methodology, insufficient accesses and incomplete participating bodies and unsatisfactory results. The factors causing the above problems are: imperfect social fund system, the outmoded family education, impertinent higher education, in-conducive public opinion and students’lack of self-education, etc. The paper concludes that in order to carry out the work effectively, big efforts must be given to the following eight aspects: building up a rather scientific education ideology, creating a good public opinion atmosphere, optimizing the teaching contents, innovating teaching methods, broadening the teaching channels, improving the social fund system, enhancing students’self-education and handling the education with appropriate scale.
