Abstract

Aim Investigate the early feeding of some infants in Changsha city to study the correlation of feeding and physical development and neurobehavioral development, which may provide a more rational guidance for infant feeding.Method From July to December of 2010,274 infants 6-12 months old who involved in the physical examination in Changsha Maternal and Chil Health Hospital were selected. Questionnaires survey was used to collect the information of birth, family demographics, breast feeding, complementary feeding, medical history, physical development, etc. Gesell Development Scale was used to evaluate development of the adaptive behaviors, large moto skills, fine motor skills, language skills and personal-social behavior. Anova single factor analysis of variance, Pearson linear correlation analysis, t test and multiple regression analysis were used.Result 1. In this survey,67.9% of the infants received exclusive breastfeeding after birth,47.8% of them continued exclusive breastfeeding for 4-5 months; 13.1% of them continued for morn than 6 months; 9.5% of the infants received completely artificial feeding after birth. As for complementary feeding, most of the infant started at 4 months (48.9%); 23.4% started at 6 months and 4.7% started before 4 months.2. The physical development of infants meet or exceed the average growth level of the WHO standard, differences were statistically significant(P<0.05). Gesell assessment results showed that 4.4%,27.7%, 17.5%,5.1% and 1.8% of infants were retardation of adaptive behaviors, large moto skills, fine motor skills, language skills and personal-social behavior, respectively; 3.Univariate analysis showed that no significant difference of physical development (weight, length) between different feeding patterns and different duration of exclusive breastfeeding; Compared the Gesell scales of different duration of exclusive breastfeeding, the results showed that the adaptive score(98.4±6.6) of exclusive breastfeeding 6 months was higher than 4-5 month group(96.5±6.9), less than 4 month group (94.1±7.5) and none-exclusive breastfeeding group(95.1±7.7),P<0.05; the large motor score of exclusive breastfeeding 6 months(94.6±10.6) was higher than less than 4 month group(90.8±10.9) and none-exclusive breastfeeding group(90.3±10.7), P<0.05; the fine motor score of exclusive breastfeeding 6 months(94.6±9.6) was higher and none-exclusive breastfeeding group(90.8±9.1), P<0.05; the language score of exclusive breastfeeding 6 months(98.0±6.7) was higher and less than 4 month group(94.6±7.2), P<0.05.4. The results of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the main influence factors of 6 months physical development included heritage, the nutrition status during pregnancy and lactation; the main factors to promote the DQ included the duration of exclusive breastfeeding, the frequency of meat comsumption higher than 3 times a week. Conclusion 1.There is no significant difference of infants physical development between different feeding patterns. Exclusive breastfeeding for infants continued to 6 months can meet their nutritional requirements.2. Prolonged exclusive breastfeeding may promote the neurobehavioral development of infants; Meat added in complementary feeding can promote the baby’s large and fine motor development.
