Abstract

PurposeTo comprehensively expound the concept, research ideas, features of data collection and analysis of grounded theory. Try to use the grounded theory in health education research on practical issues, by constructing an initial theoretical model based on analysis of some original interview data.MethodsSet forth the research ideas, features, data collection and analysis methods of the grounded theory by study the documents of domestic and foreign grounded theory and relative research on construction workers, female sex workers, AIDS. Illustrate the grounded theory research process of subject design, data collection, analysis and theory building by case study with the original interview data.ResultsThe concept, research ideas, features of data collection and analysis of grounded theory are comprehensively expounded.The research based on grounded theory includes the following components: design the outline of interview, data collection, data analysis and theory building. The research based on grounded theory mainly uses the semi-open interview on data collection, and the outline of interview should be constantly adjusted in time as the new problems appear in the course of the research. The raw data collection and analysis works should be both synchronous and alternate, the results of analysis guiding the direction and focus of the data collection. We set the entry code of interview data by using the three-level coding technology of grounded theory, find the analysis units, formulate the concept, build a preliminary theoretical model in the way of“conditions-threads-actions / interactive strategies-results”.DiscussionsThe research based on grounded theory is set forth in need of the development of health education research. It requests much on personal qualities to the researcher. Because collecting the interview data, setting entry code of the data, formulating the concept, building the theoretical model are greatly infected by the cultural and knowledge background of the researcher. It pays attention to the research process and also the findings, the building of theory, with the ultimate aim of building a theoretical model of saturation. The researcher strictly abides the requirements of the grounded theory in the course of research, and the findings have a high reliability and authenticity. The theoretical models would have more values for universal promotion as the quantitative research based on the findings of the grounded theory is conducted.The innovation of this study is to expound the grounded theory comprehensively and systematically. It illustrates the research idea by analysis of interview data of construction workers with the grounded theory. It builds a preliminary model by the use of three-level coding technology and analysis of interview data of female sex workers, thus illustrates the theory building progress of the grounded theory.
