Objective:To evaluate fluoride-arsenic combined effect on rat bone minal desity (BMD) in the chronic fluoride-arsenic combined poisoning experimental. Methods: Factaoral design was applied in the experiment.160 Wistar rats of 6 weeks old were randomly divided into 16 groups (high fluoride high arsenic group, high fluoride middle arsenic group, high fluoride low arsenic group, high fluoride group, high arsenic middle fluoride group, high arsenic low fluoride group, high arsenic group, middle fluoride middle arsenic group, middle fluoride low arsenic group, middle fluoride group, middle arsenic low fluoride group, middle arsenic group, low fluoride low arsenic group, low fluoride group, low arsenic group, control group) which were drinken the contents of high fluoride (200mg/L), middle fluoride (100mg/L), low fluoride (50mg/L) and high arsenic (34mg/L), middle arsenic (8.5mg/L), low arsenic (2.125mg/L) liquid or mixed liquid for 6 months. Control group was freely drinken distilled water. Each group had 5 male and 5 female rats and was examined BMD of double thighbones with dual energy X-ray densitometry after 2 month,4 month,6 month. Results:The obvious effects of fluoride on BMD were observed in the experiment (P<0.05). No visible effects of arsenic on BMD were observed (P>0.05). The combined effects of fluoride-arsenic on BMD in rats was insignificantly observed (P>0.05). Conclusion:The lower dose of fluoride-treated rats can increase significantly on BMD and lead to osteosclerosis in the short time. The higher dose of fluoride-treated rats can reach the highest level of BMD and cause osteosclerosis in the short time. On the contrary, in the long time the higher dose of fluoride-treated rats can decrease obviously on BMD and result in osteoporosis. No obvious combined effects were shown between arsenic and fluoride on BMD. Fluoride can cause absorption, form and minal deposit of bone. Arsenic can not affect obviously BMD in rats and unchange the impact of fluoride on BMD.
