Abstract


The romance of hairpin ranked first in“The four greatest southern opera”. From the day of its coming out, it has become a widely and enduringly appealing classic play to both refined and popular tastes and gained great concerns in the progress of modern adaptation. What is more, through the modern adaptation of The romance of Hairpin, we can see a clear interpretation of changes made from the traditional to the modern Dramatic Literature and the demands in the adaptation of traditional classic play from the points of modern aesthetic needs. Through the investigation of the scenario and the adaptations understand the adaptations from the opera in the Ancient Chinese Literature in depth, while comprehend the course of the realization and the investigation on these adaption. We hope that we can find out some question about theory and practice in the opera. This introduction is mainly divided into five fractions: the first part describes the contents and situations of the original play and its adaption. Furthermore it points out the necessity and feasibility of researching .The modern adaption of The Romance of Hairpin, and noting out the goal of this investigation. The second section gives an overview of the modern adaptation of The Romance of Hairpin, including introductions of nowadays existing adapted editions of this play and research Connected with the modern adaptation. The third and fourth sections are the main part of this paper, which focus on the artistic innovation and shortcomings in the progress of adaptation. The third section mainly describes the artistic innovation in adaptation. This section concerns on plots changing, making up for loopholes of the arrangements and composition, to the changes of plot, to make up for the leaks of the arrangements and composition, the changes in characters and full use of backing, and so on. The forth section discuss the artistic defects in modern adaption of The Romance of Hairpin, just as the loopholes and the simplification which is lead to limits of the abundance. The fifth Section mainly introduced the stage performance of The Romance of Hairpin after adaptation. This section is mainly about the usage of modern science and technology and what has happened after this. It comes down to three aspects, such as the innovation in the setting out on the stage, the designing of the stage lights, the using of the acoustics. The conclusion takes The Romance of Hairpin as a starting point, discussing the problems what the Chinese opera has facing, and looking for the way of settlement.
