Abstract


Reviewing the history of Contemporary Prose during the 20th century, a group is getting away from us. Their prose is more and more popular and their value is also causing more and more attention.They are a group of elderly people, experiencing the vicissitudes of the 20th century and their tragedies in life, but in their later years, they accumulated and bloomed. They are a group of unmatched scholars versed in things ancient and modern. With the characteristics of ancient Chinese culture, absorbing various cultures of the world and inherited the tradition of May Fourth essays, they create a large number of prose masterpieces at their later years, which become an important part of literature at the end of century.They are called "Old Generation" essayist. As a group, they lived in the unique historical and cultural background. The changing of history and vast horizons of Chinese and Western cultures have affected their creating of prose.,which makes their proses reveal themselves with "neutralism" of ancient elegance and pretty simplicity; with "marvelous beauty" of wisdom and enjoyment; with "charm" of generous spirit and broad mind and with "glamour" of vividness and nature.Old Generation prose essays as a special scene of the late 20th century will remain in the annals of contemporary prose.
