Abstract


In contemporary British literature, Ian McEwan is outstanding. His works are received widely by readers and critics. His masterpieces Time of the child and Atonement portrays stories that many heroes grew up toughly in the frustration. Time of the child, describes how Stephen rehabilitated from the case of missing his daughter. Atonement, depicts how a 13-year-old girl matured through atonement. Growth is a necessary pattern of McEwan’ work. This article aims to analyses the growth image of the novels and its narrative mode, based on these two works.This article is divided into four parts:The introduction aims to sort out McEwan’s works and the actual state of the research about his works, and then explains the theorise which are used in this article.The first chapter, aims to summarize narrative patterns in these novels from the angle of growth:growth opportunities:qualitative change of life; experiences difficulties:fighting with life; goal’s regression:remodeling life.The second chapter, aims to analyses McEwan’s narrative strategy in these two novels, from the angel of Writing Techniques. This chapter can take part in four sections:multiple perspectives, fragments of collage, intertextuality, combination of realism and fiction.The third chapter, aims to analyses the experience of McEwan and his background’s important impact on his writing.
