Urban transport has become an important of the aspect of sustaimable urban development. With the social progress and the quick development of economy.Medium-sized and small cities is at a large rate of cities in our country, especially in Helan, a major agricultural province. Medium-sized and small cities can healthilydevelop or not playes an important role in the progress of urbanization in our nation. Recently, large cities have encountered a lot of problems, such as congestion. And medium-sized and small cities shoul avoid those embarrassment. So, reasonably planning urban road network layout and transportation travel in future is urgently demanded, to keep healthy, continuously and quickly develop in medium and small cities, which can accelerate the progress of urbanization as well as industrialization in our country.This article analysis the status, trends and problems of the traditional transportation planning in our nation, combining the history and status of medium-sized and small cities at home and abroad, and basic requirements of sustainable development. Proposes that environmental bicycle and pedestrian traffic should be advocated, by analysing the influence to city transportation of series ways of travel. As well, the general problems of medium-sized and small cities are also researched, the basic requriements of sustainable development of mediumsized and small cities’traffic, and the direction of the development is also proposed.At last, this article analysis the advantages and disadvantages of the development in Zhumadian city, in the aspect of the location, natural, outbound traffic and the economic development. Then, proposes the goal and direction of sustainable development in Zhumadian city, which belongs to a medium-sized and small city, according to the connotation of traffic sustainable development, lead to the sustainable development of the medium and small cities, which is at a large rate of population in our country.
