Abstract


Since the 20th century, the religion has undergone a tremendous change worldwide. Once thought to retreat from the stage of history soon, the religion has become more and more active; the number of religion believers has not declined, as in some places it has a rapid growth. Now, the religion has effects on people’s life as before.This thesis focuses on the function of religions in modern society. This kind of study has begun at the Enlightenment in 18th century. At that time some pre-sociologists tried to find a social organization to replace the religion though studying the function of religions. Influenced by them,émile Durkheim claimed that the religion could not be replaced for it rooted in society. He also claimed the function of social integration of religion. After him, the study of function of religions has become many different branches: Talcott Parsons, Robert king Merton and Malinowski have developed their own theories respectively.The sociological qualitative method has been applied in thesis based on half-structured interview materials of 20 Christians. The thesis tried to explored the function of religions in modern society focusing on values, social roles and social relationships of religious believers’socialization. The paper can be divided into 5 chaptersChapter 1: introduce part. The definition of socialization and its theories has been present; also the characteristics of influence after the religion participate in socialization has been shown.Chapter 2: Theories about the function of religions has been arranged.Chapter 3: Methodology and targeted group have been introducedChapter 4: based on the half-structured materials, qualitative analogy of believers’values, social roles and social relationships have been taken respectively. At the end of analogy, the tension between religion and society has been discussed.Chapter 5: Epilogue, the function of religion evolved from this paper has been discussed again.
