Abstract


Objective:This study was designed to study the application of ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM) in patients with glaucoma secondary to trauma.Methods:Ninety eyes of 90 cases with traumatic secondary glaucoma underwent ophthalmic examinations, ophthalmic B-scan, goniscopy and ultrasound biomicroscopy. In angle closure glaucoma after eye injury and normal eye of itself, ultrasound biomicroscopy were performed to obtain measurements of the anterior ocular structures by its software. The data examined by ultrasound biomicroscope were analyzed and compared with the data of ophthalmic B-scan and goniscopy.Results:Ultrasound biomicroscope can show angle recession, hyphema, goniosynechia, iris cysts, ciliary foreign bodies, lens zonular breaking, lens dislocation and vitreous protrusion to posterior chamber. B- scan can show hyphema and lens dislocation. Gniscope can show angle recession, goniosynechia and iris cysts. In the angle closure glaucoma after eye injury , the thickness of the ciliary body was (1.388±0.201)mm and in the normal eye it was (1.308±0.135)mm, the difference being statistically significant(p<0.05). Parameters reflecting the changes of the anterior chamber angle were as follows: the anterior chamber shallower, the angle open distance decreased, the trabecular iris angle decreased in degree, trabecular ciliary process distance became shorter, and all these differences were statistically significant(p<0.05).Conclusion:Ultrasound biomicroscope can well reflect reasons of traumatic secondary glaucoma, especially in cornea edema, hyphema. It can be used for diagnosis of traumatic secondary glaucoma and can provide evidence for treatment. Ciliary body edema, narrow anterior chamber angle and shallow anterior chamber were often found in angle closure glaucoma after eye injury. Ciliary body edema perhaps are related to the angle closure glaucoma after eye injury.
