Abstract


Anti-culture movement of American youth, a social movement based on young students in university of America, broke out in 1960s. This movement mainly based on the New-left thought, youth student was its main force. This movement has had the profound influence on American society, something was good, yet more was destructive.Anti-culture movement of American youth has the profound historical reason. After the World WarⅡ, under the pressure of baby boom, conversion of social cultural atmosphere, reformative force caused by political oppression, as well as the gradually abundant society, the left youth cultural movement came into being. Anti-culture movement of American youth has its clear trajectory and hierarchy: Civil Rights movement, the young students join this movement, which emerges from the 1950s, they were fight for black right, this created some positive effect; Community Movement: this movement’s aim was mainly to improve the life of the poor. Although has a good aim, the young men lack the financial support and they did not really understand the depressed people’s situation, largely based on some fantasy, its still became a failure;Anti-social Violence, and hippies: this was the two destructive effect of the Anti-culture movement of American youth, and the movement was defeated mainly for these reasons.Generally, the early Civil Rights Movement turned out to be success attributed to its coincidence with the trend of American’s mainstream, while the Community Movement stepped into failure because of its Utopian trait, and meanwhile, violence caused by anti-war emotion and hippies ultimately frustrated since its opposition to the mainstream culture. There are many reasons for the movement’s failure. Firstly, the movement take the new left thought as its guiding ideology, this doomed to be not coincided with the thought of American’s mainstream; Secondly, the left youth student has a little proposition in the American youth, their background did not represents the American mainstream, moreover, the youth student was not a independent class, and so it not have the ability to change the American society. The above factor doomed the movement comes to an end.
