Abstract


Kailuan Coal Mine established in the Westernization Movement during the Late Qing Dynasty was a large and new coal mine which adopted ways of mechanization coal mining in modern China, and it was also the largest mining enterprise of Hebei province, so it had a very important position in the history of modern China’s economy. However, behind its prosperous production and management, coal mine calamities broke out constantly and were hard to stop, and the heavy casualties were astonishing. The accidents broke out constantly after Kailuan Coal Mine was established, and the fetures were as follows:serious accidents appeared frequently, the casualties were too heavy, and there were many kinds of calamities. The occurrence of coal mine calamities were related to the deep factors of technology, law, management, production ways and miners themselves, besides the natural factors. Coal mine calamities didn’t only cause great economic loss, but also directly resulted in casualties. Kailuan Coal Mine adopted salvation and governance for its calamities in modern history, but the overall effect wasn’t obvious.The calamities occurring in Kailuan Coal Mine was a mirror of the situation of coal mine calamities in modern China, and reflected the deep social background at that time. The experience and lessons summarized in this paper are worth absorbing in the process of researching and dealing with the present coal mine calamities in our country.
