Abstract

Virgin fiber paper industry slurry very early mineral fillers instead. The optical properties of the paper, the evenness of the paper printability, paper costs determine the added amount of the filler. And the increase of the filler content in the paper, will reduce the bonding force between the fibers and fillers, fibers and fiber, resulting in a loose paper thickness, stiffness, and a decrease in intensity as well as the paper linting out powder and machine wear. The surface modification of calcium carbonate is one of the effective ways to improve the performance be filled paper, research in this area is very active in the past few years. Optimal for the filler to add the amount of filler add papermaking effect in the papermaking process, while controlling the other problems in the papermaking. Predecessors the packing done a lot of research, such as the pre-flocculation of fillers poly cell cavity to be filled, different pulp species combined with the filler, the paper added fill starch. In the present research, the use of starch with a fatty acid or fatty acid salt compound, light calcium carbonate subjected to surface modification, thereby improving the binding between the fibers and the fibers between the fiber and the filler, and improving filler retention and paper strength. Research carried out in two phases: Phase I: First of fatty acids or fatty acid salt and starch mixed, surface modification of precipitated calcium carbonate, the same amount of modified calcium carbonate add to the paper by paper bursting strength, tensile strength, tear strength results of comprehensive evaluation to determine the best modifier. By orthogonal experiment gelatinization time, pasting temperature, holding time, the amount of modifier factors on the calcium carbonate modified, so as to determine the best modified operating conditions. Zeta potential, conductivity, and other means of characterization of the characteristics of the modified calcium carbonate, and observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and modified calcium carbonate morphology characterization. The research results show that: the effect of stearic acid / starch modified precipitated calcium carbonate best modified precipitated calcium carbonate Zeta and conductivity change significantly; modified precipitated calcium carbonate particles agglomeration , its dispersibility in water properties are better. Second stage: first stearate / starch modified precipitated calcium carbonate to fill the paper, the changes in the physical properties and optical properties study modified paper. One way and then using the turbidimeter and dynamic drainage analyzer indirectly reflect the modified filler retention and morphology of SEM observation paper. The results show that: in the papermaking process, pass retention of modified calcium carbonate pass retention rate than the unmodified calcium carbonate in the paper, a modified calcium carbonate filler paper physical performance has improved significantly, but the white and opacity than unmodified been reduced.
