Abstract

In this paper, ZnS-CdIn2S4 solid solution photocatalysts were prepared by a hydrothermal method. A study on composition, structure, morphology and photocatalytic activities were carried out through XRD (X-ray diffraction), ICP (Inductive coupled plasma emission spectrometer), UV-vis (UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy), FESEM (Field emission scanning electron microscopy) and test of hydrogen evolution activities. This would provide ideas for further research of the ZnS-series solid solution photocatalysts.A study on the morphology and structure of ZnS-CdIn2S4 solid solution powder were carried out through FESEM and XRD showed that ZnS-CdIn2S4 solid solution power synthesized via a hydrothermal method exhibited uniform morphology and there were no impurities of ZnS or CdIn2S4. The morphology and phase composition of ZnS-CdIn2S4 solid solutions were closely connected with the ratio of ZnS and CdIn2S4. ZnS-CdIn2S4 solid solution particles were built up with primary particles through self-assembly, the primary particles transited from nanocubic to nanosheet with the increment of CdIn2S4 components. From UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, we found ZnS-CdIn2S4 solid solution showed a red shift with the increment of CdIn2S4 components. The result from BET and BJH method showed (CdIn2)0.3Zn2.8S4 solid solutions were of high specific surface area with a porous nature where the type of the holes was slit-like pores which was in favor of the improvement of photocatalytic activities. Specific surface area and total pore volume of samples increased with the increment of synthesis temperature which rose up to 120.61m2·g-1 and 0.1255cm3·g-1 when synthesized at 240℃for 12h.Test of hydrogen evolution activities showed a high activity while the the composition was (CdIn2)0.3Zn2.8S4. The reason might to be a suitable optical absorption ability and conduction band position. Photocatalytic activities of (CdIn2)0.3Zn2.8S4 solid solution increased with the increment of synthesis temperature which might be in connection with the increment of Specific surface area and total pore volume. (CdIn2)0.3Zn2.8S4 solid solution photocatalysts met the best activities when synthesized at 240℃for 24h. After an optimization of reaction process factor such as sacrificial regent concentration of Na2S andNa2SO3, amount of photocatalyst, ultrasonic dispersion time and amount of Pt co-catalyst loaded, (CdIn2)0.3Zn2.8S4 solid solution photocatalysts reached the most highest hydrogen evolution activities of 2090μmol·h-1 which was higher than the previously reported photocatalysts.
