LEO satellite communication systems are an important part of the future global personal communication infrastructures. An important aspect of the LEO satellite network is to manage the location of both users and satellites. Many network signal flows and database updates and queries are required to accomplish such a task. As the GPS system is upgrading, and the European Galileo system, Russian GLONASS system, Chinese“Beidou”system will be built, the positioning service for mobile users will be more and more convenient. So we can consider the methodology for defining location area in LEO satellite systems based on user’s independent positioning ability.In chapter 2, a methodology for defining fixed location area in LEO satellite system for users which have independent positioning capability is proposed. By comparing user’s updating cost and paging cost, we can get the best size of location area. The results prove that there is no correlation between the best size of location area and user’s average call arrive time. We need to decide the precision of the best size of location area according to practical situation in defining fixed location area.In chapter 3, As in the methodology for defining fixed location area based on independent positioning in LEO satellite systems, users may cross the border of location areas frequently and send many location update (LU) messages. A methodology for defining cross area is proposed.In chapter 4, a methodology for defining fuzzy logic dynamic location area is proposed. User’s location update radius is changed based on the judgment of a user’s movement mode in a period of time. User’s location update and paging cost of different update radius in normal and fuzzy logic dynamic location area methodology and in different fuzzy logic statistic time are compared.The dissertation is summarized in the last chapter.
