Abstract


Since the late 19th century, there has been the China threat allegation in the United States, which was first manifested in the Chinese Exclusion Act. After the People’s Republic of China was established, the China threat allegation was once again stirred up due to China’s different political system and its increasing military capability. The following allegations in extensive scale appeared with the end of the Cold War, which involved“ideological threat”,“cultural threat”,“military threat”,“economic threat”, and“ecological threat”etc. Among all the allegations about China threat, the“China economic threat”was the major concern of the threat school as they were upset by China’s significantly fast growing economy and its increasing influence upon the regional and world affairs. They overstated China’s economic size, highlighted the trade frictions between China and the United States and exaggerated the negative impact of China’s economic rise upon the U.S. economy. Such allegations have had a negative impact upon the U.S. foreign policy toward China and further harmed the Chinese interests. Through analyzing the China economic threat allegations, this paper aims to address the major concerns of the subject by providing data and facts. The author hopes to present a more clear and convincing explanation to demonstrate that China’s economic rise will not harm the U.S. interests but benefit the U.S. economy in many ways.
