Abstract


Writing testing is indispensable in the language teaching and testing field as a high validity testing item. How to improve students’ writing ability is also an essential problem. In the classroom-based writing practice, students want their writings to be guided. They hope teacher can give their writings diagnostic feedback, detailed evaluation and related suggestions. Based on the holistic scoring and analytical scoring method of the CriterionSM, the paper tries to find out whether the combination of holistic scoring and analytical scoring method is more efficient, helpful in improving students’ writing interest, attitude and ability.Based on the Scaffolding theory, Input theory, the Zone of Proximal Development, and developing evaluation idea, the paper states the importance of the teacher’s scoring method——a very essential factor in the students’ writing practice.There are four steps in the study design, 1.Two writing assignments carried out among students; 2. Essay evaluation and data collection; 3.Questionnaire for the students; 4.Data analysis and research results. The researcher adopts the SPSS Software to analyze the data. The result shows that the combination of holistic scoring and analytical scoring method is more efficient than simply holistic scoring method or analytical scoring method in the classroom-based writing evaluation. It is more helpful in improving students’ writing interest, attitude and ability; and more acceptable by students.The paper is dedicated to finding out a helpful evaluation method to improve students’ writing ability based on the students’ needs. There are also some limitations which need improved in the future study.
