Abstract


Bathroom is an indispensable and most frequently used function space in people’s residence. With the social progress and economic growth, the quality of people’s lives has changed, leading to the change of people’s ideas. People demand more for the humanization, ecological tendency and comfort of living condition. Thus, bathroom has gradually transformed from a neglected part in residence design to a second lounge in people’s life, equal important to living room. Meanwhile, bathroom, the key point of residence design, is called the heart of residence for its strong functionality. Therefore, the design of bathroom has become an important factor to evaluate the overall function of residence and life quality.In this paper, we studied the history and culture of bathroom, found its development since the latter half of 20th century and tried to analyze the change of people’s idea from function and design of bathroom as well as people’s aethestic standard in four stages. We found that people spent more in living environment investment and the desire for bathroom has transformed from to learn from the layers of material to spirit, from functional demand to enjoying kind with the change of social structure and political policy, the economic growth, real estate development and the introduce of commodity houses. Moreover, we put forward the development feasibility of bathroom based on the excellent design of foreign bathroom and bathroom products.
