Abstract


Towns in rivers-crisscrossed Jiangnan is a nice place to travel and relax for urban citizens. People are enchanted with the silent and peaceful scene of "tiny bridge and a family aside a flowing river" for the poetic flavors of Jiangnan. With the development of tourist trades, competitions between water towns become unprecedentedly fiece. And how to keep the regional characteristics is the key to win. However, the majority of these towns are commercialized to an excessive degree, which cause the distinction between them to blur, expecially in the aspect of landscape sign design. The consequence will be a vicious circle of tourism in the towns and thus cries for solutions.Aiming at the current situation of discrepancy between social needs and design, this paper proposes the research subject of analysing the landscape sign design from the perspective of region culture. First it introduces the relevant theories domesctically and abroad concerning landscape sign design and summarizes their achievements of designs and researches. By means of first-hand investigation and interviews combined with questionnaire surveys, it points out the current problems of landscape sign design in some representative water towns like Tongli, Zhu Jianjiao and Xitang, and makes analyses of how geography, history and culture influence design elements, such as the shape, color and material of the landscape sign. Finally the paper sums up the superior region culture of the landscape sign design in river-crisscrossed Jiangnan and distills the points to remain vigorous in order to meet the needs of tourism development in water towns at modern times.All in all, this paper with the distillation of region culture as the key, emphasizes the supriority and value of region culture as a supplement to landscape sign design, which is of theoretical significance to study the landscape sign design in water towns from a new aspect.
