Abstract


Facing fierce market competition,the effect of third-party logistics (TPL) is more and more important on saving cost and improving service quality for customers. In America, the application of TPL has a relatively long history and already formed a certain scale. TPL was first introduced to China since the middle 1990s and has developed rapidly during the past ten years. But, there still exist many weaknesses comparing with America. We can find out the successful experience in the development of TPL in America according to the comparative study on TPL in China and America. However, there is little research work to conduct this kind of comparison, especially on quantitative comparison. Therefore, it is valuable to conduct an empirical study in order to quantitatively compare the current application of TPL in both China and America.Firstly, this thesis reviews the previous literature and research work related to the application of TPL in China and America, their methods and conclusions are summarized afterwards. Based on the aforementioned review, a questionnaire targeting to Chinese manufactures is designed for the purpose of this study. Secondly, a survey on the implementation of TPL in manufacturing industry in China is conducted through the designed questionnaire, and this survey includes the usage of TPL in domestic manufacturing industry, the impact of using TPL and factors that affects renewal of contracts. The data is valuable to quantitative analysis on TPL industry in China. Thirdly, Lieb’s report of the implementation of TPL in America is studied and his findings on TPL in America are compared with the findings on TPL in China from this study in terms of 6 major aspects. Finally, the differences in supply and demand between China and America are pointed out according to the comparison, the possible reasons contributing to those differences are explored and the corresponding suggestions for further improvement on TPL in China are given.
