Abstract

There are still so many marine disasters in restricted waters such as harbors, bays, canals or inland waterways. In these restricted waters, the manoeuvring motions of a ship are affected by the water depth or bank wall. But there have been few publications containing a detailed investigation into ship maneuvering characteristics in shallow water. Seen from a numerical point of view there are many challenges related to simulating a maneuvering ship. These cover issues like appendages, proppelers, many different types of flow due to different maneuvering conditions, ship motions, environmental effects like waves and shallow water, etc. Putting everything together in one model is at present not realistic, so instead a stepwise procedure has been applied in order to simplify the problem and learn about the individual issues before making the complete model. The present study, therefore, focuses on the numerical simulation of the viscous flows about a rolling ship in shallow water and calculation of the hydrodynamic forces acting on the hull. Computations were carried out, by using a RANS code, to investigate the viscous flows about Esso Osaka hull model in static rolling motions at several different water depths. The squat and trim of stern were observed from the numerical results. The present work is part of a long-range research effort, which focuses on application and validation of RANS equations for maneuvering related flow problems.
