Abstract


This paper attempts to analysis the process of word meaning from a cognitive view. Word meaning as an important aspect of linguistic studies has always been many linguists’ focus,and they have formed many different perspective, for example from lexicology, sociolinguistics even from grammar,and acquire many fruits. Since cognitive linguistics comes forth,there have been many linguists attempting to study on lexical development from a cognitive view.But, they only study onecognitive stage, for example one cognitive style_metaphor,or only involving the formation processofcategories. Basing on such research actuality, this paper on the basis of forefathers’ study, using theories of cognitive linguistics tries to systematically detailedly discovere the cognitive process of a new word or a mearning.This article taking the cognitive process of a new word or a mearning for a clue, divides this thinking process into 4 parts to discusses .The 4 parts as follows:In the first chapter, the background of this article , purpose and value of this research all are simply introduced,and writing thought and source of corpus also are introduced,and mainly discusses the theoretical perspectives of cognitive linguistics. Cognitive linguistics on the basis of forefathers’ study has a good harvest.The second, third and fourth chapter is the most important part of the article.This part discusses the cognitive process of a new word or a mearning.First, second chapter discusses the first cognitive stage of a new word or a mearning—the formation of image schema. This article using the research results of cognitive psychology, divides this thinking process that includes formations of sensation ,consciousness ,imagery and image schemas into different parts to discuss.The third chapter detailedly discusses the second cognitive stage—production of conception. Conception is a result of categorization on base of many cognitive models such as image schema. This paper according to the thinking way difference in the process of production of conception, divides the ways of production of conception into four to discuss.The four approaches are as follows: By means of categorization on the basis of prototype, conception is produced; Conception appears by conversion of image schema;A new conception appears by metaphor, metonymy and other cognitive styles.By classifying,we can clearly see the mode and approach for conception appearance. Production of conception does not mean the production of a new word or a mearning, because conception is different from semantic. Conception wanting to become semantic, must have special language form to express itself, so lexicalization is an absolutely necessary stage in cognitive language form to express itself, so lexicalization is an absolutely necessary stage in cognitive process of a new word or a mearning.That how does conception lexicalize is main contains of the forth chapter.This chapter based on the last chapter simply discusses the basic mode and approach for lexicalization,and summarize main characteristics of Chinese lexicalization.Chapter five is the conclusion.In this chapter we summarizes the cognitive process of a new word or a mearning.From that objective things act on our sense organs and make us forming sensation, perception, image and Conception to that lexicalization is completed and a new word or a mearning generates,which is a complete cognitive process. At the same time,this chapter is the summary of the whole dissertation.
