Abstract


Consumption, investment and net export are considered as the three major principles of economy growth in GDP analysis. Consumption especially exerts long-lasting motive force in economy growth. Since the Reformation and Opening-up, the levels of Chinese residents’income and consumption have gradually risen. The transformation of consumption structure and the expansion of consumption needs have constituted the major motive for economy growth in high speed. Particularly, as the coming of 1990’s, the influence of the change of consumption structure on national economy growth has been enhanced. Consumption structure is the key issue of the study on consumption economy and the important symbol of consumption situation in certain time. The study on residents’consumption structure, the knowledge on the change tendency and rules of consumption structure, and the mastery of the hot issue and tendency of consumption needs helps greatly in offering consumers advantageous environment of policy and guides them properly in extending consumption, so as to harmonize the modulation of enterprise structure with the optimization of consumption structure. That plays an important role in accelerating and improving the quality of economy growth.This dissertation bases on the study of the characteristics of the change of Chongqing urban residents’consumption structure since the Reformation and Opening-up, and explores their relationship with economy growth.As the only municipality directly under the Central Government in central and western China, Chongqing is striding forward towards the great goal of the biggest economy center in the upper reaches of the Yangtse River. Since the Reformation and Opening-up, especially after the ascending as municipality in 1997, the economy of Chongqing has grown with high-speed; the lives of residents have experienced the conversion from being poor to well-to-do; and the consumption structure of urban residents has changed accordingly. This dissertation expounds some relevant theories on consumption structure firstly; then, it analyzes dynamically the consumption structure with the guideline of Engle Coefficient and the consumption structure change rate, and educes the characteristics of the change of Chongqing urban residents’consumption structure since 1979; it goes on to discuss the theory of ELES, and analyzes statically Chongqing urban residents’consumption structure in 2006 by adopting ELES. With the conclusion from that static analysis, it researches on marginal consumption tendency, income elasticity of demand, price elasticity of demand, and basic consumption needs, and educes the characteristics and the main problems of present consumption structure in Chongqing. At last, it probes into the relationship between consumption structure of urban residents and economy growth in Chongqing, and puts forward some proper advices on economy growth in allusion to the economy actuality in Chongqing.
