On Teaching Listening Through Authentic Videos for Non-English Majors

Abstract


With the rapid development of economy and technology, popular culture has had a very important influence on contemporary college students. In the language classroom, many teachers try to use the original film to stimulate student motivation, active classroom atmosphere. In this paper, the hearing test, the effect of the questionnaire and students reviews the various forms of the original film and television for the Teaching of English Listening research, in order to help more and more concerned about the students' communicative competence college English teaching. This paper first reviews the domestic and foreign language teaching experts on the use of visual material on foreign language learning, including film and television history and advantages for foreign language learning. Then introduced the theoretical basis of the original film in teaching listening, motivation theory, schema theory, the point of view of the theory of dual decoding elaborated the feasibility of the use of film and television for the teaching of English listening. In order to study the effect of the original film to stimulate students' motivation to learn and make use of the original film and television in teaching listening, a teaching experiment conducted in 2007, the experiment lasted for almost a semester subjects for non-English professional Donghua University freshman 60 new students in the experimental group and a control group of 30 each. In the experiments, the authors use a different language materials for teaching, the experimental group received language carrier based on the original film and television listening class, while the control group received in Listening Course traditional textbooks for language carrier. Experimental group classroom activities by the author to be designed according to the characteristics of the original film and television, while the control group is based on textbooks organize teaching activities. In this paper, data collected through questionnaires, tests and student self-evaluation, the preliminary findings proved that the original film as the language carrier to better stimulate students' learning motivation, the use of the original film and television listening teaching can achieve better in some respects than the use of traditional textbooks teaching effectiveness. The statistical results also showed the true character of the film language can contribute to a deeper understanding of the experimental group students' knowledge of spoken language body, and a greater awareness in terms of voice, intonation and nonverbal behavior. The experimental group students listening teaching positive attitude applies to the original film and television. These conclusions are the use of the original film and television for English teachers in the language classroom teaching listening provides a theoretical and practical basis. Finally, the paper points out the limitations and inadequacies of the study, and a reference for future research recommendations.
