Abstract


Iris Murdoch, who combines a prolific output with a consistently high level of fictional achievement, is universally acknowledged as one of the most important novelists in postwar Britain. She is also noted for her dualistic imagination and plague of contradictions in works. However, the juxtaposition of opposing forces and paradoxical ideas puzzle even irritate many readers. Nuns and Soldiers, with its special chronological and artistic position, can be regarded as a miniature of Murdoch’s styles as well as a manifestation of a typical controversial Murdochian novel. Through a deconstructive reading of Nuns and Soldiers, this dissertation will probe into some binary opposition prominent in Murdoch’s writing. By considering Murdoch’s thoughts, statements and supporting details in Nuns and Soldiers, the hierarchy of truth and unreality, freedom and confinement, goodness and vice will be analyzed, undermined, and reconstitute. Its aim is not only to interpret this particular novel, but also to have a deeper understanding of how Murdoch presents and justifies her ideas through the contradiction and controversy of her works.
