Abstract


In today's increasingly large-scale networks, packet capture and analysis techniques are being widely used. Packet capture analysis, real-time understanding of the use of the network, analyzing the bottleneck of the network operation, discovered network packet carrying illegal content. Traditional packet capture system based on general considerations, will spend a lot of resources for interrupt overhead and memory copy overhead, the system call overhead and protocol processing overhead. To improve the performance capture packets, packet capture system widely adopted zero-copy technology. Packet capture system with zero-copy technology to achieve a zero system call, zero memory copy, while avoiding the complexity of the kernel protocol processing, greatly improve the performance of packet capture system. However, the zero-copy packet capture system is not considered to reduce interrupt overhead. To reduce interrupt overhead, to further improve the performance of zero-copy packet capture system is the purpose of this study. Interrupt overhead related to the interrupt processing of the memory data of the network adapter and the host exchange and Linux systems on the network adapter. Work and innovation of the main points include: 1. Analysis of the high-speed network adapters and host memory data exchange, that using DMA chain transfer and command queue transmission combination, this approach requires the host memory and network adapter hardware storage space set the descriptor buffer; 2. analysis of the network adapter Get descriptor way, based on the drive way and DMA engine based on the way; 3 host memory and the network adapter the the hardware descriptor buffer model, quantitative analysis of the relationship of the various parameters that affect the size of the buffer, provide theoretical guidance for the design of the CIA NIC project; 4. analysis of the Linux system on the network adapter interrupt processing, analysis interruption the advantages and disadvantages of the driver and poll-driven mechanism proposed semi-polling driven mechanism to reduce interrupt overhead. Used in the network adapter hardware interrupt merging technique to reduce the number of interrupts. In order to reduce the Linux system on the network adapter interrupt processing time proposed using the buffer pool technology, pre-allocated a certain size of the data buffer in user space, to avoid the need to apply to the system buffer each interrupt handling, at the same time avoid an unnecessary copy process packets from kernel space to user space, the so-called zero-copy technology.
