Abstract


One of the chief forms of expression in painting is space construction, about which people have never ceased their exploration in the development of painting. Due to artists’ various understanding toward space in drawing in different times, painting style has undergone continuous changes, which has promoted the development of painting. With space construction as the theme, the present thesis attempts to survey the features of space expression at different stages of western painting, and review their features and evolution from those of primitive time to the modern 20th century painting. Through comparison, people will have a clear understanding of the previous forms of space expression and its transformation so as to develop new expressions in painting.
