The new view has been proposed that ruralsettlement. market town and city are three stages of a sequence of settlement unity.The paper has put emPhasis on the supportable role of market town.It has a1so pointed the purpose of studies on development of settlements is todiscover the evolutionary law of settlement undel’ special geographicenvironment, in order to provide scleniific base for sustainable development ofreqional settlemenis. In this part, a study area have been selected, and th’3Purpose\ contents and frameworks of studies have been decided.In part II is chiefly on studies of system of market town, the relationsh1pbetween thc fOrmation of market town and geographic environment, thecharacteristics and funct1on of market towns have been studles. Follouying theanal}s1s of the formation mecllanlsm in perspectlve of spatio-emporaI andstructure levels stUdies traditional pattern of geographic science. Furthermore, by-using these pattern, the paper have deduced and inferred the system of Shilin’smarket towns. On the basis of these studies, the theoretical fran1ex’ork and system74-2have been put forward.In Part Ill the sustainable development problem of market toxvn.~ rural settlement and city have been analyzed in the light of sustainability. A simulation of spatio?temporal distribution of settlement development in Shilin country have been done. On these basis, the development trend of market towns have been forecasted.
