Studies on Biological Characteristic, Turf Quality and Cold Hardiess of Native Bermudagrass in Jialing river area Liu Linglong (The Department of Grassland Science, college of animal science and technology, Sichuan agriculture university, yaan, 625014, sichuan) abstract In order to exploit the rich germplasm resources of native bermudagrass in Jialing river area, which can be utilized to improve the conditions of cultivar scarcity and poor cold hardinass existed in bermudagrass?appliance at present, 24 native materials collected along Jialing river area had been experimented through plot trial, and simultaneously two foreign introduced cultivars ?Tifway? 揓ackpot?were tested as the controls, each material抯 biological characteristic, turf quality and cold hardiness had been compared. The result shows that: to the phonological phase of native bermudagrass, they almost totally become green in March, in May they start head sprouting and blooming, fruiting in June, and in December they begin dormant. Except for the dormant phase, other phonological phases have no significant differences. To the morphological features of native bermudagrass, 9 traits such as the internode length and diameter of stolon, reproductive culm height, stand natural height, foliar length and width, inflorenscence lengh, floret number of each spikelet, root system depth have significant distinctions. Their ranges are 2.67-6.84cm, 0.10-0.16cm, 40 7.3-29.93cm, 3.8-28.3cm, 2.07-8.99cm, 0.26-0.36cm, 3.14-5.05cm, 28-46, 12.4-30.6cm, respectively. The chlorophllous content of native bermudagrass is higher than that of Tifway or Jckpot generally, and significant differences are also existed among native bermudagrasses, especially SAU99-42, SAU99-59 are populations with the highest chlorophllous content. Based on the size of leaf area, all bermudagrass materials can be divided into three types, namely, large type, medium type, and small type in terms of cluster analysis. The native bennudagrass have excellent disease resistence except a few of which occur white-leaf disease and blight. In the evaluation of amenity turf quality, the performance of native bermudagrass is inferior to that of introduced cultivars. Electric conductivity is proved to be a simple, convenient and effective laboratory method to determine the cold hardiness of bermudagrass. According to electric conductivity method and green period observation, the cold hardiness of native bermudagrass is superior to that of introduced cultivars. SAU99-38 (collected from Tongliang county) was selected as forage and conservation of soil and water, whereas SAU99-63 (collected from Tongnan county) can be exploited as turfgrass with good cold hardiness. Other native bermudagrasses have the potential used as breeding materials and worth further studing in the future.
