Abstract


The paper focuses on the comparison between the tone in Chinese Language and the tone in Thai Language. Firstly, we discuss the four tones and their combinations in Chinese and the five tones in Thai and their features. And then we analyze the language transfer that may happen when the students whose native language are Thai are studying Chinese as a second language. Base on the theory of general phonetics and phonology, we make experimental research on the Thai students with the methods of experimental phonetics. We analyze the feature of the tone both in Chinese and in Thai. The result of the analysis on the phonetic errors which are made by the Thai students when they study Chinese tone shows that there are few differences between their contour, while the biggest difference lies in their pitch range. The tone of Thai language have positive effect as well as negative effect on the Thai students when they study the tone of Putonghua Thai which have great influence on the Thai students when they study the tone of Chinese. On the one hand, they have less difficulties in learning Chinese tone than the students whose native language is toneless. On the other hand it is easier for them to mispronounce the Chinese tone by using the tone of Thai instead. We shall pay more attention to it.
