With the development of the network communication from telephony and data to video and multimedia broadband services, Internet network technologies have been becoming an important part of the information infrastructure in a country, which seep into every aspects of society, economy and life. As a core device to construct future interconnecting network, router technology inosculates modern communication technology, computer technology, network technology, micro-electronics chip technology, large scale integrated circuit technology, photoelectron technology and optical communication technology. It is a crystal of modern high technologies. The dramatic development of Internet makes IP technology defacto standard and an open system platform in the computer network application environment. But IP network is a connectionless-oriented network. It cannot guarantee the end-to-end QoS of user’s data. On the other hand, ATM is a connection-oriented broadband communication technology with good QoS guarantees, which integrates the merits of packet switching and circuit switching. But its signaling protocol is too complicated to be used and its routing flexibility is low. So the main track that broadband network takes is to inosculate the most advanced ATM switching technology with the most popular IP technology, which can protect existing investments as well as meet the requirements of the new services. MPLS simplifies the integration of ATM switching technology and IP technology. It introduces label-based mechanism to separate routing from forwarding. Labels are used to specify the route that the data packets go through the network. Its virtue lies that it introduces the characteristic of connection mode into aconnectionless-oriented network and it can provide end-to-end service guarantees in both reliability and service quality to user. Nowadays, high-end core routers use parallel processing mechanism with hardware forwarding, which makes the forwarding delay is independent with the length of the IP packets and solves the problem of delay jitter caused by indeterminate length of IP packets. However, router technology nowadays thinks a lot of the connection-oriented manner provided by MPLS and the flexibility brought by multi-layers label stack as well as the ability to implement traffic engineering using MPLS technology. So we must consider implementing MPLS on router devices.In order to upgrade a router device to a label switching router (LSR) with the capability of MPLS, we must design the hardware forwarding plane as well as software controlling plane of a router to make sure that the LSR can guarantee parallel forwarding with line speed using hardware forwarding. Since LSR needs to consider supporting label stacking, it may suffer from the times nondeterminacy of looking up forwarding table when using hardware forwarding. To solve this problem, we need to design the header-processing unit and the looking-up unit in the forwarding and processing module elaborately. Moreover, we need to design the operation union of the label stack in the MPLS label-forwarding table in order to meet the requirements to support label switched paths. In this dissertation, two MPLS forwarding schemes in hardware data-forwarding plane are put forward, which are the cascade looking-up scheme and the circulation looking-up scheme. On the aspect of protocolsoftware, the Linux-based source codes of the MPLS signaling protocol------LDP / CR-LDP are analyzed^ built and debugged and finally they will be transported into the control protocol stack of the gigabits core router which based on an embedded real time operating system------VxWorks.This dissertation describes the design and implementation of the MPLS technology onto the gigabits core router aiming at these problems.
