Abstract

In this paper the leaf senescence of wheat with several morphological and physiologic parameter was studied in different level of nutrition supply and normal condition of water. Garden pots (20cm 20cm) filled with clean sand were used to culture the seedling. Two varieties ( No. 621, drought resistance, and Zhong Mai No. 9, drought sensitivity) were used. The results indicated that:(1) De-green of leaf always started from the tip of old leaf. Senescence had reached fourth leaf when sampling and no significant difference could be found within the treatments. The difference could not be found between species also.(2) Photosynthesis rate and number of green leave decreased with the level of nutrition supplying. Influence of fertilization was higher on the rate of leaf germination than to delay senescence.(3) Change of chlorophyll was same with photosynthesis. Content of chlorophyll of drought resistant variety was higher than sensitive variety in treatment of high fertilization level.(4) Content of water in de-green leaf (fourth leaf) maintain higher level. It indicated that the cell of leaf still had activity of physiology and the membrane remained intact.(5) Change of protein concentration of leaf was same as chlorophyll and photosynthesis. It can be concluded that de-green of leaf happened orderly. The death initial from older leaf and senescence begin from tip of leaf. In declining leaf photosynthesis rate decreased significantly and contentof chlorophyll and protein reduced at the same time. But water content of leaf still remained higher level. The evidence reveal that the senescence of wheat leaf had the characteristic of programmed cell death in morphologic and physiologic in this study.
