Abstract


As a variety of EST (English for Science and Technology), Popular Science English is becoming more and more important and popular in the great context of the rapid development of science&technology and globalization. However, the study of Popular Science translation is still in its primary stage, and the practice is lack of theory guidance. This paper, from the perspective of adaptation theory, studies the translation of Popular Science English. Many examples are applied to demonstrate that the theory can effectively guide the translation. The study aims to provide a new method to Popular Science English translation.Popular Science English is scientific in content, plain and vivid in expression, and its subject is closed to the ordinary readers. Based on these features, this paper applied one of the important theories of pragmatics—adaptation theory, to illustrate the strategies of Popular Science English translation. In the process of language choosing—using—adapting, the contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability are the main contents of adaptation theory. Therefore, in the main part, the author analyses Popular Science English translation under the guidance of contextual adaptability, including communicative context and linguistic context, as well as structural adaptability, which includes the deep structure adaptation and style adaptation.According to the analyses in the main part, this paper concludes that in the framework of adaptation theory, Popular Science English translation is a dynamic process of adaptation, which should be varied and adjusted in terms of bilingual context and language structure. The principle is to achieve dynamic generation of meaning based on Chinese and English languages. And the artistic dynamics and flexibility is subject to the objective and scientific information of the text.
