Abstract


Literature is an art of language. While, as the literary genre, due to the limitation ofstage performance and the script itself, drama has the higher demand on the language. Inthis respect, traditional opera, The Legend of West Wing-Room in Yuan Dynasty, can beundoubtedly called a paragon. Characters in this drama are elegant and refined. Besides withregard to narration and expression of emotion, they are of generality and graphic traits,which have received numerous predecessors’ high praises and aroused their wondermentsimultaneously. But it has been continuously controversial in the aspect of the comment on thelanguage style of The Legend of West Wing-Room. Such as Wang Jide in Ming Dynasty andXu Dachun in Qing Dynasty considered its language belongs to plain style. While Zhu Quanand Jia Zhongming in Ming Dynasty and Wu Mei in modern times all considered it to be arepresentative of literary grace. No matter the language is plain or gorgeous in The Legend of West Wing-Room, in myopinion, it is applied express different people’s personality nature and spiritual state. Underthe direction of traditional opera theory, this thesis will be divided into three aspects toexpound the splendid language. They are “plain beauty”, “beauty of suiting both refined andpopular tastes” and “gorgeous beauty”. In conclusion, The Legend of West Wing-Room is a far-reaching classic drama and itbears profound thoughts and exquisite artistry. Readers will have a strong sense of artisticbeauty. Accordingly it is rather appropriate to comment on the language style of The legendof west wing-Room by using Su Dongpo’s “to liken the West Lake to Xi Zi(one of the fourgreatest beauties in Chinese ancient times), it is always natural whether in strong or lightmake-up”.
