Abstract

Cosmetic brand name is subordinate to a kind of trademark. The multiplicity in meaning, peculiarity in function and dependency in culture determine that a translated name must realize the function of trademarks, not only present the characteristics of products but also cater for consumers’psychology, culture and value orientation. Therefore, we should pay attention to the cultural transfer in the process of translation.Adaptation Theory was first put forward by Jef. Verschueren in 1999 and it was considered as a pragmatic theory which has strong explanatory power and good application value and it is bound to have a good prospective because it comprehends and interprets pragmatics from a new perspective (He Ziran, Yu Guodong 1999:428-435). The thesis discusses the three hierarchically related properties:variability, negotiability and adaptability. The author collects many translated cosmetic brand names in daily life to serve as the linguistic data. On the basis of Adaptation Theory, especially the core of it---the contextual correlates of adaptability, the thesis probes into the application of Adaptation Theory into cosmetic brand name translation. The translator’s linguistic making-choice should be a process of dynamic adaptation, not only to the products’ characteristics but also to the mental world and social world in context and structure of target language. Accordingly, if special attention is paid to the adaptation in brand name translation, the cultural transfer will be realized between languages and thereby brand will be welcomed by target consumers, thus help to achieve successful intercultural communication and remarkable sales promotion in the target culture. In other words, adaptation is the key to the development of any brand that wants to widen businesses in foreign markets.
