Abstract

Since the May Fourth movement, the Chinese language has experienced significant changes under the impact of the external influences like the drastic changes in social life and other external events. Due to the special social environment then, English language, as an overwhelming element, penetrates Chinese deeply. Under the challenge of western languages and cultures, this almost‘self-sufficient’system of Chinese was broken apart one level after another. With translation in a large scale of the Western literary works during the past century, the Chinese language now bears obviously the mark of Western language influence. A large number of Europeanized constructions and expressions have come into Chinese with the aid of translation, hence forming a typical phenomenon in Modern Chinese—Europeanized Grammar. The Europeanization of Chinese grammar is one of the great events in history. The formation and development of Modern Chinese, to some extent, are closely related to Europeanization.Then the thesis gives a brief review of the historical and present situation of Europeanization of Chinese language and attempts to present a brief survey of the previous studies on Europeanized Grammar in Modern Chinese. The studies of Europeanization can be dated back to as early as the 1920s. However, up to now, most studies in this field are prescriptive which are limited to merely argument for or against the Europeanization of Chinese. For the people who are for the application of the Europeanization of Chinese, think that if we borrow some new expressions from foreign languages, in this way, we can bring some fresh expressions to Chinese language. But to the people, who are against the Europeanization of Chinese, think that it will ruin the purity of Chinese. They have to a large extent overlooked the fact that Europeanized Grammar is already a fact of existence in Modern Chinese. Moreover, most of their conclusions are based on the subjective judgment, personal experience or their feelings to language. In that case, the conclusions they drew are less objective.Based on the above facts, the thesis firstly shows the present study in a systemic categorization and investigation of the Europeanized Grammar in Modern Chinese from the interrelated perspective. We hope that we could reveal the mechanism that how the Europeanization came into being and the internal relationship between Europeanization and the evolution of Chinese. So the thesis is divided into three chapters: Chapter one, the thesis mainly analyses the characteristics of English and Chinese perspective, the advantages of English and the shortcoming of Chinese in particular. Chapter two, the thesis mainly analyses the process of how the English transforms its advantages into the Chinese. That’s the very point the thesis is elaborating on. Chapter three, the thesis makes a dialectical analysis of the effects of Europeanization makes on Chinese. According to the interrelated theory of linguistic semeiology, we should view Europeanization from the scientific angle. The rationality of Europeanization plays the main part in Chinese Grammar. As to the over-Europeanization, it only plays a subordinate role in the process. Europeanization is complementary to Chinese.
