Abstract


Since the ancient times, the literature is regional. The author’s works is always closely connected with his regional environment. "Book of Songs" and "Songs of Chu" are works of strong regional characteristics. With the development of Chinese literature, a large number of regional writers were born under the influence of various different regional culture, such as Lao she, Zhao Shuli, Sun Li, etc. They carry out the understanding and investigation on people’s living customs, local manners and feelings in their hometown. Shen Congwen is one of them. By displaying the culture, history, people and events in western Hunan with their language and reflecting the local cultural characteristics and customs with characteristic literature technique in western Hunan, he achieved great success and constructed a mysterious and wonderful world of western Hunan.The regionalism of Shen Congwen’s works were deeply influenced by WuChu culture, the Lao-Zhuang Taoism thought and the Beijing style writer.So his works reveals revereing nature, loving life, advocating human nature and respecting emotion everywhere, which emphasizes the harmony between human and nature.As the typical representative of the Beijing style writer, he opposes the politicization and commercialization of the literature, paying attention to the rural China and the civilian’s reality. He criticizes urban civilization and longs for charm of western Hunan, focusing on expressing feelings and cherishing "rural pastoral". Shen Congwen has abundant experience of life. There are three entirely different kinds of life patterns in his childhood, youth and the middle age, which made him have a strong cultural inferiority complex.Therefore he is keen on regional description because of his legendary experience and the psychological factor of cultural inferiority.In Shen Congwen’s works, taking western Hunan world as his describing object, he depicted a group of kindhearted, pure and brave mountain people in plenty of strange, charming and pure pictures of customs.And he excavated the unique primitive,natural and healthy human nature of Western Hunan, which reflected national character.These are all regional concrete embodiment in his works.Shen Congwen has made special historical contribution to Chinese literary arena. He built an ideal home of western Hunan world and pondered the fate of country and nation.His influence of rural pastoral style is profound and he established a poetic and lyrical novel style. He played a positive promoting role in rising of literature searching for its roots in the 1980s."Western Hunan myth" will last forever in Chinese literary arena and continue to send out dazzling bright light.
