Abstract


Truman Capote, one of the most famous writers in modern American, whose early works focused on short stories and novels, was awarded Henry.O.Prize three times and once National Institute of Creative Arts Award for Literature. He was also the chairman of Pen USA. Capote’s greatest creation for the American literature is a new writing style which he called it“non-fiction”style when he wrote In Cold Blood. Besides, Capote also had gift for travelogue, play, movie, etc. His works has been translated into many languages all over the world. However, our people hadn’t been familiar with Truman Capote and his works until 1980s. Even now, only some of his short stories and novels were translated into Chinese, hardly his travelogues, plays and biographies have been translated. There even isn’t a complete Chinese version of Truman Capote’s works. And the Truman Capote studies in China are quite incomplete. Compared to Truman Capote’s contribution to literature, this situation is irrational. With the overview of the development and changes of Truman Capote studies in China, we should not only analyze its distinctive features and shortages but also contribute to its further research.The history of the Truman Capote studies in China reflects the collisions and optional features in the process of communications in literature exchange since the Reform and Opening up. Scholars of China emphasize on Capote’s several works, especial In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Comparing with the studies in western countries, Truman Capote studies in China lacks of some aspects, such as poetics, power of discourse. It shows that there is still space for improvement.Misreading and mistranslation, which reflect the acceptance screen and anticipation field of vision, always exist when intercultural communications occur. With a thorough inquiry to Truman Capote studies in China, we aim to summarize three features and focus on the shorts and put forward the prospect.
