Abstract


Carson McCullers(1917-1967) is one of the most unique and prominent writers in American literature. She depicts the lower classes and shapes them into physically, psychologically deformed characters by means of grotesque technique. She experiences success early with the theme of her future creation-spiritual isolation and loneliness at the same time. In the following novels, including Reflection In A Golden Eyes, The Ballad of Sad Caféand The Member of the Wedding, Carson McCullers retains her consistent writing style and carries it on. The theme of spiritual isolation and loneliness is explored deeply and totally in these novels.McCllers suffers from her unfortunate marriage and miserable illness and she can not get herself out from the shadow of depression and loneliness. On the basis of such special understanding and feelings towards life, such themes as abnormality, morbidity, torture and sadness are easy for her to handle.This thesis aims to illustrate the human relationship in McCullers’two novels from the perspective of psychology, including identification and compensation. And then we could explore the deep reasons of the theme-loneliness and isolation. In Chapter one, the author of the thesis will briefly introduce McCullers and her literary achievements. In chapter two, the author of the thesis will introduce the chosen theories, complete with several kinds of identifications and anxieties. The theme of chapter three is saving and the author of the thesis will analyze interpersonal relationship by identification and compensation. People in the chosen novels tried to save themselves at the beginning and they also thought that they have found their right identification objects. In chapter four, the theme is destruction because of the failure or dislocation of identification. All the relationships are feint, which results in their tragedy. We have said that identification and compensation are the ways to ease the anxieties. The author of the thesis would also explore the reasons of the protagonists’anxieties and seek for why they have found the superficial identification objects, demonstrating the missing of interpersonal relationship and its consequence. Chapter Five mainly focuses on Carson McCullers’literary creation theory-The process of the writher’s literary creation is the process of his or her seeking for identity, and her views about identity which plays the fundamental role in human life. There are also embodiments of identification in her literary creation. In chapter six, the author of the thesis will point the root of the loneliness-missing of Identification and Compensation.
