Abstract


This thesis analyses the conflict between father and son and its development in Kafka’s novels from the angle of sin and punishment;it aims to explore the position, connotation and meanings of the conflict between father and son in Kafka’s novels. It elaborates the reason of the exsitence of the conflict between father and son in Kafka’s novels through analyzing in view of Kafka’s course of growth, cultural, social and historical background. It also points out the enlightenment of the conflict between father and son in Kafka’s novels to the modern society.The introduction part briefly introduces Kafka’s life and the main characteristics of his works. It also indicates the internal relations between several Kafka’s works. Chapter one:“sin and punishment”. Here defines sin and punishment in Kafka’s works. It also explore into the reason why there are sin and punishment from the point of the conflict between father and son, together with Kafka’s education, race and characteristics.Chapter two:“the development of the conflict between father and son”. This chapter focuses on how the conflict develops. It will be departed into three parts. Chapter three:“everlasting conflict between father and son”. This chapter the cultural and historical meaning of the conflict between father and son. This is illustrated in three aspects: first, from the relation between the conflict and collective unconsciousness of human beins; second, from the dissimilation of the conflict; last, from the enlightment to the modern society.Conclusion: Through the description of the conflict between father and son, Kafka illustrates his life experience of the external authority of his father as well as the confusions he has in front of the overwhelming authority of his father. Kafka is releasing and saving himself in his works, but his novels moves people and makes him famous because his works comform to the epochal confusions of his time.
